MSV MINISTT Electronic String Tension Meter
Establishing string tension and monitoring its subsequent loss of tension is important for both stringers and players.
There are various devices both mechanical and electronic on the market to do this, ranging from in-plant diagnostic centers for rackets to mechanical spring devices that can be carried in a player's tennis bag.
Mauve Sports-MSV's Mini STT is a small, battery-powered electronic device that does this job very well and economically. It can be conveniently carried in the pocket of a tennis bag, provided it has some protection against bumps and knocks.
For the player, it is possible to measure and record an initial string tension and compare it with periodic checks after the racket has been used in play or even after it has been stored. Strings lose tension all the time even when the racket is not in use. A 15-20% reduction in string tension compared to that recorded immediately after stringing is perhaps a good time to readjust. It is, of course, the player's choice.
If you use the string tester as a COMPARISON INDICATOR, that is, something that allows you to compare the condition of the stringbed when you first measure it to the figure you get in subsequent checks, then it is a very useful tool. The first check should ideally be measured immediately after the stringer has completed stringing. This figure can be compared to any previous string job, provided the string type and material, reference tension, and of course, the racket are always the same. A change in any of these conditions will affect the figures.
How does the MSV MINISTT work? You clip the MSV MINISTT to the strings. By tapping the racket frame with your fingers, the strings begin to oscillate. The resonant frequency will be translated into the exact tension displayed digitally in kiloponds (which is equivalent to kilograms). Measurement range from 15 to 35 kp (kg) / 37 lb. to 77 lb.
