New Mantis PS III the evolution... September 3, 2018 21:00

MANTIS 300 PS-III - 285 PS-III

two weights, two racquets, two personalities...

At first glance, the new MANTIS 100" PS-III series racquets appear entirely similar in shape. Were it not for the different livery color and different lettering, they might seem like two chromatic versions of the same racquet.

But let's look in detail at the common elements and the differences, thanks to the analysis carried out with the help of the pro-t-one racquet-lab and pro-t-one swing-lab.

Mantis 300PS III

Mantis 285 PS III

Very similar in general shape to the previous version, the MANTIS 100" 300g as well as the 285g are clearly distinguished by new, very aggressive and extremely attractive graphic designs that reinterpret the colors of the previous series with a new "verve," introducing blue for the lighter series and clearly distinguishing the smaller from its older sister by the choice of electric blue.

The quality of construction and assembly is absolutely remarkable, as is the level of painting, the application of decals, and the general quality of the frames.

One of the differences that can be appreciated from the frame's finish is the type of carbon used for the frame's surface finish.

In the case of the heavier frame, the use of a "braided carbon 2K" fabric is evident, while for the 285g, the visible carbon is unidirectional.

The choice of using a "carbon braided" fabric for the heavier model is absolutely aimed at better vibration absorption, a softer impact feel, as well as a progressive and full response typical of this type of material. In contrast, the use of a drier, livelier, and more reactive material for the "little one" at 285g is motivated by the desire to give vitality to a lighter and more accessible basic frame that should not be underestimated and can rightly be considered an excellent basis for customization.

MANTIS 100 300g-285g

static stiffness analysis of MANTIS 300 stringbed - 2018

static stiffness analysis of MANTIS 285 stringbed - 2018

From the analysis of the static stiffness data of the stringbed, both models show a VERY WIDE AND HOMOGENEOUS RESPONSE, suggesting EXCELLENT TOLERANCE FOR OFF-CENTER HITS, good stability, and spin generation.

The performance differences between the two models are minimal and highlight a truly very wide optimal impact zone that allows maximum tolerance in all playing conditions, as well as top-level power and spin generation.

With this type of data, it is possible to emphasize the versatility in string choices and combinations, which leaves all avenues open for using multifilament and hybrid combinations, especially recommended for the lighter model, as well as stiffer or softer polyesters, depending on one's playing level for the 300g model.

The rounded and very regular shape, the string spacing, and the grommet design help to find an excellent combination of sensitivity, feel, spin generation, and power in a very balanced combination, as is MANTIS tradition.

pro-t-one flexpoint analysis

MANTIS 300 static flexural analysis - 2018

Although the two racquets have the same shape, they are distinguished by nuances and general attitudes, also from a structural point of view, during the mass lamination phase.

They are NOT simply the same frame with added weight in the handle, a solution used by many manufacturers, but are in fact two different racquets with a flexural behavior that reflects the placement and position of the carbon layers.

The MANTIS 300 PS-III is stiffer at the head and more flexible at the base, unlike the MANTIS 285 PS-III which, on the contrary, is stiffer at the bottom and then allows for greater flexibility in the upper part of the oval.

The difference in perception is subtle but appreciable and results in two different playing feelings that, in both cases, guarantee excellent ball connection.

MANTIS 285 static flexural analysis - 2018

The different position of the carbon layers and the type of material used have been studied and optimized to guarantee maximum performance and feel according to the weight characteristics of the two frames.

Not a single project, not a single frame, but rather two different projects based on two personalities with different nuances and aspects.

in summary......

Two sisters then, with different characteristics, more than the single weight data would suggest.

The 300g, already an excellent competition racket, can accompany competitive players of any level but also appeals to casual enthusiasts given its remarkably high level of comfort and enjoyable impact.

The 285g is an ideal racket for enthusiasts, intended for junior players in development as well as competitive female players looking for a performing and lightweight racket.

For both, don't forget the possibility of more or less heavy customization for those seeking a tailor-made tool that maximizes playability, spin generation, or rather a cannonball that blasts through the tarpaulin!

As mentioned, the MANTIS PS-III pairs well with various solutions even from the point of view of possible string setups, always ensuring high-quality material and the highest quality stringing service.

Mantis Custom 98 - The Power of Customization September 14, 2016 18:43

Talking about "custom" in the world of tennis brings us into a technical, professional, but also sometimes esoteric, mysterious, and distant realm, linked by definition to the rackets of pros—those impossible, difficult, and unattainable, hard-to-find and very expensive, and often completely unplayable!

In reality, from experience, what often distinguishes the rackets of players who frequent ITF and ATP tournaments from those of "mere mortals" (with the due distinction of pro-room rackets reserved only for the top 20) are the details, the attention to particularity, and above all a fundamental element: customization based on needs, tastes, and "desires," which, starting from commercially available or previously available models, allow the equipment used by the athlete to be transformed, made unique, personal, and tailor-made.

What often characterizes both the average and high-level tennis player, in most cases, is the scarce or complete lack of knowledge about their equipment and its characteristics—that is, what specifications make any racket "THE" suitable racket that perfectly fits their physical, morphological, technical, and performance characteristics.

Let's think of cyclists and how every athlete, even a simple amateur "granfondo" enthusiast, knows the measurements of their seat tube, saddle height, top tube length, crank arm length, stem length, and handlebar width, and sometimes more. Let's make a quick comparison with the average technical knowledge of a tennis player in a "situational" sport where the equipment can influence physical, technical, and mental components to a variable extent, estimable within a range of 5-10-15%.

As true tennis players, not improvised or Sunday players, we must become aware of the equipment that allows us to play at our best, and this simply means knowing the values that interest us in terms of weight, balance, swingweight, length, and stiffness, and trying, or even better, creating a racket that reflects these characteristics.

The MANTIS CUSTOM project is based precisely on this premise: that of forging equipment with all the characteristics of a pro-stock, tailored to the player's peculiarities and specifications; with the possibility of intervening in a unique, personalized, and completely particular way in terms of weight, balance, swingweight, and length of the equipment by playing on the basis of a frame built with very high-quality high-modulus graphite and endowed with truly unique pliability.

Mantis Custom 98 - The customizable tennis racket

On this technical basis, following the specifications provided by the customer, it is possible to "calibrate" the weight, balance, swingweight, polarization, length, grip size, and its finish in order to obtain a power or control racket, a medium-light, "tweener" or heavy racket thanks to the manual "tuning" action that allows to obtain with a precision of 0.2g of weight, 1mm of balance and 1kgcm of SWW "your own" unique and unrepeatable equipment.

It is fundamental to emphasize that starting from an absolutely neutral base like that of the basic frame, it is possible to operate to obtain very different frames, which tend to favor power rather than control, or spin generation or stability at the net, as well as other characteristics that can be modulated according to the desired custom build. Rackets can be built with variable lengths from 68.5cm upwards with an upper limit of 70cm, coupled with weights that can range from 295g to 330g and more for an unstrung frame. The swingweight can be expertly dosed according to the weight, length, and balance.

The Mantis Italia Custom Project and HMA Sport staff will be at your disposal to help you choose and personalize your racket and to assist you in creating YOUR weapon of choice.

Mantis Custom 98 - Custom tennis racket for your needs

After manual preparation, each racket is checked and finished with a personalized adhesive tag bearing the "customer's" name and the racket's specifications, a truly unique piece conceived, handmade, and finished around the player, because after all, a racket cannot turn a hack into a champion, but a good racket can allow the player to express themselves to their full potential, because ultimately, it's always good to know and experience firsthand the "power of custom"!

Mantis Custom 98 - The customizable tennis racket July 17, 2016 02:44

It is with pride that we announce the launch of the project "Mantis Custom 98".

Mantis Sport International, and in particular its founder Martin Aldridge, supported the Mantis Sport Italia team in the creation of a very limited edition racket of 65 pieces.

We at HMA Sport are aligned with the vision of Mantis Sport Italia and believe that the future of the tennis racket will develop along two divergent paths. The first will be dominated by major brands, capable of making enormous advertising investments to secure top players with tens of millions of dollars, and will target a retail audience. The second path will be that of niche brands, which will have to focus on the absolute quality of materials and the possibility for consumers to find exactly "their" racket.

This market is made up of the most demanding tennis players, competitive players, or simply those who are truly able to perceive the quality beneath an attractive paint job.

The project Mantis Custom 98 consists of manufacturing a very small number of frames, with pro stock quality characteristics, deeply customizable, available to Italian enthusiasts.

After six weeks of waiting, the 65 pieces (15 of which are destined for Japan) produced with this logic have finally arrived in Italy.

Mantis Custom 98 frames meet the highest possible quality standards, have unique graphics, and a length that can be up to 71 cm.

The frame, built with the best high-modulus graphite, combines with handle shells similar in shape to Wilson or Head, with Mantis range or natural leather grips, and can be balanced according to the individual tennis player's specifications.

The frame has a 98-inch string bed and a 16/19 string pattern, a constant 21 mm profile, hybrid boxed and elliptical, light and particularly stable, already successfully tested for several years in the company's Pro 295 model.

The possibility of customizing it at will will allow for a fantastic and, above all, unique tool for each individual tennis player.

If this idea proves successful (the investment for the production of such a limited and particular stock was considerable) it will have a follow-up and will represent the direction in which Mantis will decisively move.

If it is not understood, it will remain a precious item that 65 lucky people in the world will be able to display on the court.

Mantis Pro 310 II Racquet Diagnostic Test February 6, 2016 23:02

Today, thanks to the fantastic "Raquet Lab" by engineer Gabriele Medri, we bring you the test of the Pro 310, which identifies this racket as a high-level all-rounder. The Mantis Pro 310 does not have a strong propensity for a single quality, but rather a medium-high level in all the various aspects that characterize a racket: power, spin aptitude, stability, maneuverability, control, comfort, and arm protection, all rated between 7 and 7.5. A racket that allows you to do everything well.

Quad-Core technology ensures 6% more ball speed and greater stability December 11, 2015 04:40

Test Procedure

  • The rackets were used by the same players, under the same conditions.
  • The rackets were strung with the same polyester string at 50 pounds.
  • The frames compared have the same shape and dimensions (Formula vs. Pure Drive), weighing 300 grams and with a 100-inch stringbed, 16/19 string pattern.
  • The traditional hollow-core racket has high stiffness RA 70, the Donnay Quad-Core has medium-low stiffness RA 60.
  • The test was conducted by measuring a series of 30 shots executed during matches.

Test Results

  • The average shot speed of the traditional (hollow) racket was 142 km/h, the average shot speed of the Donnay Quad-Core was 150 km/h.
  • The athletes' sensation was that the rackets with Quad-Core technology offered significantly superior stability.

Test Conclusion

Quad-Core rackets provide greater control and 6% more ball speed on shots, which translates, for example, to 10 miles per hour more on serve. The Quad-Core racket is found to be much more comfortable and stable.
